Dry Needling: An Effective Technique for Relieving Chronic Muscle Pain

Are you struggling with persistent muscle tension, tendinitis, or migraines?

Dry Needling is a modern therapeutic method performed by healthcare professionals that directly targets muscle knots responsible for your pain. Quick, precise, and often painless, this technique helps release tight muscles and restore comfort and mobility.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling (also known as « trigger point dry needling ») involves inserting a very fine needle into a trigger point—a tight, sensitive spot in a muscle that can cause local or referred pain (such as sciatica, migraines, or tendinitis).

This mechanical stimulation causes a local twitch response in the muscle, which helps to:

  • relax the targeted area,

  • reduce local inflammation,

  • improve range of motion,

  • relieve pain effectively.

Unlike acupuncture, Dry Needling is based on modern neuro-muscular principles, not traditional Chinese medicine.

 Two Types of Dry Needling

➤ Deep Dry Needling (Intramuscular Stimulation)

The needle is inserted directly into the trigger point to provoke a twitch response in the muscle.

➤ Superficial Dry Needling (Afferent Stimulation)

The needle is inserted more shallowly, without reaching the muscle, to stimulate the nerve endings and reduce tension.

What Conditions Can Dry Needling Help With?

Dry Needling is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders, including:

  • Tendinitis: tennis elbow, iliotibial band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, etc.

  • Chronic muscle tension: lower back pain, neck stiffness, trapezius tightness…

  • Referred or diffuse pain: deep, hard-to-localize aches or radiating pain

  • Migraines, headaches & bruxism: tension in the jaw, temples, or neck
