What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the most commonly used method in traditional Chinese medicine. It is based on the belief that energy, known as « Qi, » flows through the body. This energy is transported via a network of 12 main channels or « meridians » that connect the surface to the internal organs. Along these meridians are acupuncture points, each with its own characteristics and indications.

Through these meridians connecting the organs and viscera, the acupuncturist uses specific points to influence the quality and regulation of energy necessary to alleviate the patient’s ailments.

Initially, the practitioner conducts an assessment by taking the patient’s pulse and correlating all the information gathered during the medical history. Following this synthesis, the practitioner will choose, based on their knowledge, which points to needle, heat with moxibustion, or work with cupping therapy.

When to get acupuncture and how many sessions?

Do you have one of the symptoms mentioned above? Acupuncture can help relieve them. During the first acupuncture session, I conduct a comprehensive review of your medical history. After this theoretical assessment, we proceed to an energetic evaluation with pulse taking and abdominal palpation. Based on the results, an acupuncture protocol is established.

If the issue is acute, the pain may disappear by the end of the session, and sometimes a second session isn’t necessary. If the issue has been present for a long time, multiple sessions will be required. It’s important to allow about 2-3 weeks between each session for chronic conditions, giving the body time to process the information. A feeling of fatigue may occur after a session, known as rebound effect, which can last from 2 to 5 days as the body needs to accept and register what has been done.

For acute conditions (cold, sinusitis, sprain…), it may be necessary to have one session every day or every other day. In this case, I will not charge you for the 2 or 3 sessions needed to address the problem.

Please note that an acupuncture session is not a medical procedure. It is always recommended to consult your doctor if you have significant symptoms.

Under no circumstances does acupuncture replace medication.

Mukaino Technique

Invented by Dr. Yoshito Mukaino in Japan in the late 1980s, the Mukaino method is based on the principles of Chinese meridians combined with the analysis of movements such as flexion, extension, rotation, inclination, adduction, and abduction.

Dr. Mukaino linked these pathways to movements we perform in daily life to relieve the pains that may result from them.

The session begins with an assessment of 30 specific movements to determine which meridian(s) is/are related to your pain. Then, through digitopuncture (acupuncture with the finger, without needles) on specific points, the goal is to restore the balance of the involved meridian, thereby relieving pain and mobility restrictions.
